The Voice of Democracy Patriotic Audio Essay Competition is sponsored by the VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars. It is the VFW’s main scholarship program for the youth of the United States. Each year, over 40,000 high school students compete for over $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme was “Why My Vote Matters.”
This is Elyse Rutherford’s 3rd year competing in this contest. The past two years Elyse has done a fantastic job winning local, district, regional competitions. This year she took her steadfast dedication a step further by winning the local, district, regional, and state competitions, qualifying her for the national competition in Washington DC in early March. To say we are proud of the young lady would be an understatement; it is through her hard work, dedication, and perseverance that she has become a Wyoming State Champion. If Elyse wins at the National Competition, she will be eligible for a $30,000 award.
